MAY THE ODDS BE EVER IN YOUR FAVOR

8th Graders are you ready? This will be one of the novels we will be reading in class.  Lucky for us, the movie comes out on March 23,  2012.  Be prepared to create our own ideal cast, design our own costumes, and more fun to come.  It will be exciting to see what our class comes up with in comparison to the movie.  Keep up with my sweet little blog to see all of the exciting updates with this class adventure.

NEW THRICE SONG......

I have been waiting for this for a while...can't wait until the new album hits my ears. 9/20/11 - ENJOY...I know I sure did.  I will be using the works of Thrice in my classroom many times, so please get familiar with them.  Great lyricist and musicians.

Today's Webinar “Integrating the Arts Across the Curriculum”

Wow, so many great resources to browse through.  Can't wait to implement some of what I have learned.  It is so great to hear people so passionate about education and integrating the arts while doing it.  Something that really stuck with me was that the arts should be co-equal with the other subjects, not something you just throw in to take up time.  Think of puzzle pieces that fit together to create an overall picture.....hmmmm that makes me think of a class project....more info/pictures to come soon!

Digital Images in the Language Arts Classroom

Below is an awesome link to an article out of Learning & Leading with Technology. Volume 31 Number 8. 18.
It delves  into the topic of digital images in the Language Arts Classroom.  Digital story boards take reading and writing to a whole new level.
Enjoy!

Just another good video from the same session as the post below this one. Pay attention to the lyrics and see if you can relate. Enjoy!

Autobiographies versus Memoirs

"Unplugged: The Avett Brothers: Laundry Room"

*Please follow the above link and listen to The Avett Brothers description of their song Laundry Room.

What is the difference between an autobiography and a memoir? I thought this was a good example to explain the difference between the two.

"An autobiography focuses on the chronology of the writer’s entire life while a memoir covers one specific aspect of the writer’s life. So, if I chose to write about my complete life up to this point—including growing up in Cincinnati, my time in New York, the few years I spent in Chicago and eventually landing at Writer’s Digest—I’d write an autobiography. If wrote a book about the winter of my sophomore year in high school where I got my tongue stuck to an icy pole, I’d write a memoir."

Dr. Jean's Cheer Box

Thanks to the awesome presenters at the Texas Adolescent Literacy Academies (TALA) workshop for 6th-8th grade ELA/Reading Teachers, I am now one website richer in motivating students.  There will be many more to come, but I thought I would introduce http://www.drjean.org/ and her cheer cards first.  We could all use a little pick me up!
Take one cheer each day and use it all day long. Put it in the box at the end of the day. The next day, select another cheer and use it all day long. After about two weeks, you’ll have a box full of celebrations. Let children choose a cheer out of the box to celebrate an accomplishment or to reinforce positive behavior. The celebrations are also great for a “brain break” or a “smile break.” Encourage your students to create their own cheers and teach them to the class!.

Currently Reading!

Summer is one of my favorite times of year! Why? Because I get to read more.
     I am currently reading:
  • -City of Fallen Angels (The Mortal Instruments Book #4) by Cassandra Clare

Before you read Book #4, I suggest reading:

  • -City of Bones (The Mortal Instruments Book #1) by Cassandra Clare
  • -City of Ashes (The Mortal Instruments Book #2) by Cassandra Clare
  • -City of Glass (The Mortal Instruments Book #3) by Cassandra Clare
&
  • -Clockwork Angel (The Infernal Devices Book #1) by Cassandra Clare
Do you have to read all of these first? Absolutely not.  Do I recommend it? Yes, Yes I do!

Happy Reading! :)

Follow Friday!

As a personal challenge and a way to start this blog I am going to give recognition to some amazing people; whether it be musicians, artists, photographers, educators, fellow bloggers, or just everyday people. Hence the name, Follow Friday. So here it goes, meet Jenn:
I am Jennifer Crowder (formerly Jennifer Williams), sole photographer of Stretch Photos. I have a Bachelor of Fine Arts with an emphasis in Photography from The University of Texas at San Antonio. I am based in San Antonio, TX, and I have been shooting portraits for over 7 years now.

My work is often a blend of fine art and fashion. It's quirky, colorful, fun and exciting. I love to create sets, or find amazing locations that help tell stories. My main goal in every portrait is to stretch beyond conventional photography, and capture a person, or group of persons in a way that really digs down deep into who they are- or who they want to be portrayed as.
Jenn is currently shooting day 48 of her 365 Day Project which involves her doing "mini-shoots" everyday for one year. Below are a few examples:
